Somerton Mold Remediation
Mold Removal and Remediation in Somerton, AZ
Somerton gets more mold work than the rest of Yuma County, and it is not a coincidence. This is irrigated farmland. Canals run close to housing, the ground under the slabs stays damp in a way it does not out in open desert, and that changes how homes here behave.
Aquasafe Restoration has worked Somerton for more than 20 years. Our remediation follows the IICRC S520 standard, the visual assessment is free, and we refer laboratory testing to an independent hygienist rather than grading our own work.

Why Somerton Homes Grow Mold in a Desert
Yuma County averages about three inches of rain a year, so people reasonably assume mold is a wet-climate problem. Indoor moisture has very little to do with outdoor rainfall, and Somerton sits in the middle of the Yuma Valley, where roughly 90 percent of the country’s winter leafy greens are grown between November and March. Keeping that going means canal irrigation running most of the year.
Steady irrigation next to housing keeps soil moisture up. Under a slab home that shows up as damp slab edges, white efflorescence on the concrete, and flooring adhesive letting go along exterior walls. Where moisture sits against organic material long enough, mold follows.
The four causes we find most often here
- Slab moisture: Moisture migrating up through the concrete, usually showing first as lifting flooring or a musty smell along one exterior wall.
- Evaporative coolers: Swamp coolers add humidity to the house by design, and roof-mounted units leak directly into ceilings. A standing reservoir grows mold all summer and blows spores through the house.
- AC condensate lines: Clogged condensate drains overflow into ceilings and wall cavities, and nobody notices until there is a stain.
- Undetected plumbing leaks: In older Somerton housing, a slow supply or drain leak can run behind a wall for months before anything is visible.
Mold Testing in Somerton: What We Do and What We Refuse to Do
A lot of Somerton searches are for mold testing and inspection rather than removal, so this is worth being direct about.
Arizona has no state licensing for mold inspectors or remediators. Anyone here can advertise mold inspection without holding a credential, which puts the vetting on you.
We provide a free visual assessment: we find the moisture source with meters and thermal imaging, map how far it has spread, and give you a written scope. What we do not do is laboratory air and surface sampling, because we also do the removal. The ANSI/IICRC S520 standard calls for that verification to come from an independent third party, and a company that tests, quotes, remediates, and then re-tests has graded its own work at every stage.
When you need sampling, we point you to an independent hygienist with no stake in what we quote.
Our Somerton Mold Remediation Process
Removal without fixing the moisture source is a temporary result. Our process follows IICRC S520:
- Find and stop the water: Nothing else matters until the source is identified. Slab moisture, a cooler line, a condensate drain, or a plumbing leak all get handled differently.
- Containment: The work area is sealed and put under negative air pressure with HEPA filtration so spores do not travel into the rest of the house during removal.
- Removal: Porous material that has been colonized comes out: affected drywall, insulation, carpet, and pad. Non-porous surfaces are cleaned rather than discarded.
- HEPA cleaning and treatment: The contained area is HEPA vacuumed, wiped, and treated with an antimicrobial before anything gets closed up.
- Drying: Air movers and commercial dehumidifiers run until moisture readings say the structure is dry. In Somerton this often takes longer than average, because a slab already carrying moisture from below does not come down on a standard timeline.
- Rebuild: We replace what came out, from drywall and baseboard through flooring.
We do not close a floor early to hit a number. Sealing new material over a slab that is still wet is how a repaired home has a mold problem again six months later.
Agricultural and Commercial Property
Somerton’s economy runs on agriculture, and mold in a packing or cold storage operation is a sanitation and compliance problem before it is a building problem. We document contamination category and provide paperwork for both your insurance carrier and your own inspection file.
We also work rentals and small commercial property throughout Somerton and the communities along the river toward San Luis.

Somerton Mold Remediation FAQs
Do you charge for a mold inspection in Somerton?
The visual assessment is free. We come out, find the moisture source with moisture meters and thermal imaging, map how far the problem spreads, and give you a written scope if there is work to do. Laboratory sampling is separate paid work and we refer it to an independent hygienist.
Why won’t you do the mold testing yourselves?
Because we do the removal. The ANSI/IICRC S520 standard calls for verification to be performed by an independent third party, and a company that grades its own work has a financial reason to pass it. We would rather your lab report come from somebody with no stake in our estimate.
Is mold worse in Somerton than in Yuma?
In our experience yes, and the irrigation is why. Canal water running most of the year next to housing keeps ground moisture higher than it is in open desert, which drives slab moisture problems that simply do not occur the same way a few miles east.
How long does mold remediation take?
A contained single-room job is typically 3 to 5 days including drying. Larger spreads run longer, and Somerton slab homes often need extra drying time because the concrete is already carrying moisture from below. Rebuild is scheduled after the space passes dry readings.
Will homeowners insurance cover mold removal?
It depends on the cause. Mold resulting from a sudden covered event, like a burst supply line, is often covered, though many Arizona policies cap mold coverage at a set dollar amount. Mold from a long-running leak or from humidity and maintenance issues is usually excluded. We document the loss and work with your adjuster either way.
My floor is lifting along one wall. Is that mold?
It is often slab moisture rather than a leak, which is common in the irrigated parts of the valley. It can lead to mold if organic material stays damp. We can meter the slab and tell you whether you are looking at a plumbing problem, a slab moisture problem, or an active mold problem, which are three different repairs.
