Sewage Backup Cleanup Yuma

Yuma homes sit on slabs, which puts the drain lines under the concrete. When a lateral blocks, the sewage has to surface somewhere, and it takes the lowest opening it can find. That is usually a floor drain, a shower pan, or a ground-floor toilet, which is why a kitchen blockage often shows up in a bathroom at the other end of the house.

It also means the water spreads across finished floor and into the base of the walls instead of draining away. Anything porous sitting on that slab has now absorbed Category 3 water.

Why the backup happened:

Inside the City of Yuma, most developed property runs to the Figueroa Avenue treatment plant or to the Desert Dunes facility on the east side. A backup on the municipal system is usually a blocked lateral on your side of the connection, though a main-line surcharge does happen. Much of unincorporated Yuma County, including rural property out toward Wellton, is on septic instead, where a backup usually means a full tank or a failed leach field.

Monsoon season adds a third cause. Storm runoff finding its way into sewer lines can surcharge the system, which is one reason sewage calls cluster in the same weeks as flood calls.

What comes out, and what stays:

• Carpet and pad: Both are removed. Padding cannot be disinfected once it absorbs Category 3 water, and neither can carpet backing.
• Drywall below the water line: Cut out to at least 12 inches above the highest point the water reached, so the wall cavity can be cleaned and dried.
• Insulation: Any insulation in an affected wall cavity comes out with the drywall.
• Porous contents: Upholstered furniture, mattresses, particle board, and cardboard that made contact are not salvageable.
• Hard surfaces stay: Tile, sealed concrete, finished wood, metal, and plastic get cleaned, disinfected, and dried in place.

After removal, every affected surface is cleaned and treated with an EPA-registered disinfectant, the space is dried with air movers and dehumidifiers, and HEPA air scrubbers run throughout to control airborne contamination. Then we rebuild what came out.
